Associate of Science Program in Film and Video Production Technology

In the Piedmont Community College Film and Video Production Technology program we use a hands-on class project paradigm as the structure for teaching filmmaking. Narrative story projects are shot each semester on High Definition digital video or 16 mm film with running times of 5 to 90 minutes. Each semester we produce one large project or several small projects and shoot 12 or more full 8-hour production days. It is on these shoot days that students get to really immerse themselves in real-world hands-on production. These productions challenge the students. They build valuable skills and the confidence so important for career success in the film industry.

Guest artists and faculty mentors lead the students on class projects, hold masters classes and teach by example. The full time faculty has extensive experience in professional film and video work. Our adjunct faculty are all working professionals who either own their own film and video production companies or work as freelance film and video professionals. By working with professionals our students learn professional procedures, nomenclature and production techniques. The adjunct faculty also serve as a career networking resource for our graduates. Many of our graduates are hired on their first professional shoot on the recommendation of one of our adjunct faculty. Graduates can find employment in companies owned by our adjuncts.

The production equipment used by our students is a complete professional independent feature film production package. We have a five-ton grip truck, lights ranging in size from 200 Watts to 12,000 Watts, a movie-quiet 500 AMP generator and two camera dollies. We own a high definition Panasonic HVX200 camera with state-of the-art tapless workflow, 3 film cameras including an Arri SR II 16mm package, and 20 standard definition digital video cameras. There are two complete tapless audio capture packages with wireless microphones and a full compliment of professional audio accessories used in our productions.

We often rent or receive donations from vendors of specialty equipment and operators to use on our productions for job specialization training including: Panavision cameras, Chapman dollies, Jimmy Jib camera cranes, car mount rigs, pyrotechnic and visual special effects equipment, and construction scissor lifts and bucket units used for large night exterior lighting setups.

The Film and Video Production Technology program is housed in a building specifically designed and constructed from the ground up for film, video and animation training. It includes a sound stage lighting laboratory with a lighting grid, 2000 Amps of electrical service, a controllable sound attenuated HVAC system and a large cyclorama for special effects green screen and compositing work. The sound performance lab and control room include non-parallel walls to reduce standing sound waves and Foley pits used in sound design. An Avid editing workstation provides the platform for the Pro Tools sound design software and hardware used in the sound design classes.

The Digital Editing laboratory includes 21 workstations. Installed software on each workstation includes Final Cut Pro 6 for video and film editing, Motion 3 for graphics and animation in 3D, Soundtrack Pro 2 for professional audio post-production, Color, for professional color grading and finishing, Compressor 3 and DVD Studio Pro 4 for digital media delivery. The animation laboratory has 22 workstations with Maya, After Effects and other professional 2D and 3D software titles installed.

We partner with other two-year and four-year colleges and universities to increase the outreach of our program and to expand the scope of our class projects by resource sharing. By partnering with the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, North Carolina School of the Arts, North Carolina A&T University, Chapman University, Duke University, and Guilford Technical Community College we have been able to produce long form narrative story projects that would have been beyond our reach without this inter-college cooperation. By working with students from other institutions our students expand their professional career network and contribute to the evolution of our regional grassroots production infrastructure.

Our program has distinguished itself by winning awards and other recognition for many of the class projects we have produced. Our goal is for our students to leave our program with a portfolio of award winning professional projects that showcase their skills as film and video professionals.

OUT-OF-STATE tuition $233.30 PER CREDIT HOUR MAXIMUM CHARGE BASED ON 16 CREDIT HOURS $3,732.80 per semester
